I am doing a reno on my upstairs bathroom and putting pot lighting in a drop ceiling. I left the drywall on the old insulated ceiling and would like to know how far I have to drop the new ceiling? Better yet, How much clearance do I need from the top of the 50 watt GU 10 pot lights to the old ceiling?

The clearances will be shown in whatever paperwork came with the lights.

You will not need IC cans in the drop ceiling.

Unless he insulates the drop ceiling this will not be an issue. Right?

Most of the heat on the can still goes out the top. Might still be wise to stay with the clearances. You also would want to make sure not to have any flex ducts keep the clearance away from the cans. That 3" clearance is for heat dissapation.

Thanks guys, They are not ic rated and i will not be insulating the space (The insulation is in the ceiling above). I will build the drop low enough to have that 3" clearance from old drywall. Thanks again!!!
