Just bought the property. It has old heavy large casement windows with heavy duty hinges. I freed the crank movement and the windows move fine. The problem is that the sash from most windows has sunk on the latch end making the sash un-square. I can push up on the corner of the sash at the latch end and the glass shifts as the end lifts square. If I square it up, I can close the window.

What are the odds of being able to square up these old sashes? I don't want to run a brace diagonal across the glass. I'm not sure angle brackets in the inside corners would hold it square.

Anyone have any experience with this? I have considered just putting double hung in there or replacing the sashes entirely but figured I'd check to see if I'm missing an easy fix.

Thank you!

The easiest way would be to close & lock the sash & then run a bead of silicone on both inside & outside .

The problem you are experiencing is likely NOT simply because the window is old . Casement windows & full length glass doors often sag because of improper placement of "setting blocks" . There is a way to install glass in hinged sashes & doors that puts all the weight on the hinges .

LOL, yea I was hoping to avoid making those casements into picture windows. As far as rot, I've really inspected these up and down, there really is no rot that I can see.

Partner of mine just came in and said "why don't you just put handles on the inside to pull the window in that last 1/2 inch".

That may be the near term solution. Will continue to think about it. I know I can re-square those windows, just don't like the way it will look in the end.

I was reading about placing the glazing blocks to ensure the weight is on the hinge. Damage done I guess.

Thank you for the help guys.
