In our house for some reason they wired in a 4 wire (2 hot, 1 neutral + ground) 220/110v circuit plus gas and separate 110 to give the option to use gas or electric dryer. Since we have a gas dryer and the outlet is on the same wall as the garage, is there any reason (code or otherwise) why I couldn't just flip the box to the garage side and use the circuit for something useful like a compressor, welder, or car charger (if and when we get an electric vehicle)?

It may be a code requirement to have the dryer receptacle. I seem to remember something about this during a code update class.

According to clarkcountynv.gov, we are on 2011 NEC and I don't see any amendments that address that as code. Don't have a copy of the full 2011 NEC to reference though. If it means anything the house was built in 1995

As far as I know the code doesn't mandate any 240V circuits. It does require one dedicated 20A, 120V circuit for the laundry.
