I am looking into re-doing my old baseboard and trim in my house. I am unsure of the age of the baseboard/trim but I would guess it is 20+ years. It appears the previous owners put stain over its previous paint/stain.

I do not want to remove it but would like to put some stain/paint on it for a cleaner look. It is currently a dark brown and I would like to stick to a similar look.

Is there any suggestions on what I should do or how to approach this.

Thanks,

Joel

Not sure I understand your question. Once stained woodwork is painted it stays painted unless you remove ALL the paint and refinish it. You can lightly sand it and paint it any color you like. Do you know if the current paint is latex or oil base?

Stain over paint? Strip it all back down to wood, or replace it all. I find replacing is much easier and less time consuming. You most likely have pine, which you may purchase that any where you find wood products. The wood trim in our house is 130 years old, so it is nice and dry, and beautiful chestnut, I would never think about replacing it with pine. But I did strip all the banisters and railing. Someone painted and then tried to stain over that to look like dark wood. I thought, why not just stain it with walnut or chestnut stain? It took me a couple days to remove all the old crud and about a week to put on 3 coats of chestnut stain and 3 coats of poly. Sanding between each coat.
