We've lived in our house for a little under 3 years now. When we first moved in we had rats in our crawlspace. We had an exterminator set bait traps, after 16 bodies the first year it cleared up. We had 2 the next year and I've been keeping up the bait traps but have had no signs of rats in our house.

The first year I also saw that the rats lived in our neighbor's house, which I could tell from them running atop the fence between our houses, on some vines and into holes in the siding. We reported to the city, and the city sent a notice after which we saw him cleaning up debris in his back yard.

This year, we still see rats outside. They have chewed through all of our plastic garbage cans and recycle bins. Yesterday, I sat looking out the window and I saw a squirrel sitting on top of a garbage can, a rat looking around on the ground next to the garbage cans, and another rat going in and out of my neighbor's house through gaps in the siding at the crawlspace.

Our city has a fine structure of increasing fines until a 4th offense when it becomes a misdemeanor punishable by $500 fines and/or up to 90 days in jail.

I don't talk to this neighbor much, I've spoken with him twice, but I am sure he's not in a great financial position and he's not home much - weather it's becaue he's working all the time or otherwise avoiding the house, who knows.

The options I'm weighing are calling the city again to report it or offering to pay $100 towards bringing in an exterminator. If I pick the latter but need to report, I think it'd make it more obvious who is reporting... I dunno. Wondering what other people think?

If it's that bad I'd be offering to pay for the whole thing if that's what it took.
In a single year it's possible there could be hundreds if not more rats if this is not brought under control.
If you offer and he says no, so be it, this can cause your house to be distroyed and lower the property value.
He says no, then make the call. He's going to know you called one way or the other.

I wouldn't mind paying the whole thing, my recollection was it cost me $150 for the first call. I'm a little concerned it's going to be like something from a hoarding reality show in his house and access to the crawlspace might be problematic.

Both of our houses are constructed similar, it's on a crawlspace with no real foundation, just the house structure is supported by stacks of concrete blocks. Most of these houses have been bought in the past few years, torn down and built new then sold. One of these builders asked me about this neighbor because he was interested in trying to buy. It'd be a relief if that happenned, but that was a year ago and I'm guessing the neighbor must not be interested.

Ayuh,.... Meet him for coffee, 'n Give 'im a case or 2, or 3 of Decon rat bait sets....

If left out where it stays dry, it'll take care of the problem in short order....

Willk forget about calling, fight your own battle. I have a rat problem, I set traps and do the best I can. Decon is a treat, get Tomcat bait. I don’t bait anymore, I lost my Lab at 6 years of age.:( No signs or symptoms, he expired during the night. So now all I use is traps. If the whole neighborhood is not doing a rat program, the rats will be there. Clean up everything around your house. It is all you can do!

We have a cat, and she did catch a young rat one time. But these norway rats get big enough as adults that a house cat is not going to be catching them. They're bigger than the squirrels. One of them the dead bodies I pulled out of our crawlspace our first year was pregnant and about the size of a kleenex box, and I mean not including the tail.

The neighbor did have a dog, but I haven't seen it in a while. And when we first moved in and the rats were a problem, the dog didn't make any difference then either.

If I see him today I'll give him fair warning, I'll offer to help with an exterminator or with getting and placing poison and/or traps in his crawlspace. If I don't see him I'm not going to wait all week though.

I've seen on some rare occasions the rat bait blocks at HD, but they don't seem to carry them anymore and all I can get is either the trays of pellets or the trap with 1 block in it. When the exterminator set us up, he set up 8 of the bait stations with at least 6 blocks each. Buying individual bait stations at $8 each would add up too much.

I don't think I've ever seen the pellets get taken.

There is at least a dozen stray cats around here and they don't mess with them Norways either. Go to tractor supply, get a bucket of Tomcat and small spool of bailing wire. The bait has a hole in it, wire it to something.

Great idea, thanks - I had no idea where I'd be able to find them when I couldn't find them at any hardware, big box or garden store in the area. It's about 25 miles away though.

Now that you mention it though, it made me think of Granger which has stores closer.

Id have some fun with it !
Buy a good pellet gun and a case of beer. Invite a bunch of buddy's over and have a competition on how can bag the most rats.
Everyone chips in $20 winner takes the pot.
My dad did that with squirrels after they kept getting in the detatched garage and chewed up a leather interior and convertible top in his 1946 Lincoln Continental.

Our city has a really good guide to rats posted though, they're generally nocturnal and if you see them in the daytime, it's a sign of a serious infestation.

Rats at neighbors

Google 'liquid rat poison' and you'll find sources of a powerful liquid that works during hot, dry spells or in dry places. Instructions have you add a little water. I understand it is a high salt liquid that is more appealing than table salt; they're soon dead from drinking too much.

You'll want to keep the trays away from pets and wildlife.

They say some mice and rats develop a tolerance to the solid bait poisons.

I've seen rats chew through wood, drywall, plaster, concrete.
One time I saw them smart enough to lay insulation over the 12 X 12" sticky traps to get to the food.

No cats (theyre for mice), no guns (theyre for gangs), no poison (they kill other non intended). get a RAT TERRIER. yes, now you have to buy dog food, but hey, otherwise, you have to move. Also, dont blame Norway for Norway rats. They came from China, like the other pestilenic diseases/carriers.

Nicely stated. But can one dog really kill an entire population of huge Norway rats w/o being injured or getting some illness from the rats? Vet bills will make an exterminator's fee look miniscule by comparison. When a rat is cornered he puts up a fierce fight. They must be feeding on something. Eliminate the food source if possible and you eliminate the rats.

Been a few years since Bio classes and animal pathology, but I am confident if one is all up to date with dog immunizations (distemper, rabies, botulinum, etc) rats shouldnt communicate diseases. Yes, he could get bit, but he doesnt care! hes gonna get the rat! Do soccer players care knowing they have a good chance of getting their knee smashed, and living with permanent damage many times, during their short lived sports career?
