I was doing my kitchen ceiling and ran out of R-30. I have maybe a 30 inch space left to do, and would hate to have to buy an entire bundle, to complete it. Anybody know if I could double or triple up some left over R-13 and if it would pass inspection?

The only person who could answer that is your building inspector. What works and what passes inspection are two different things.

Check out Craigslist and see if anyone in the neighborhood has some leftover R-30 that they might be trying to get out of their garage.

You might also check the box stores in their insulation section, I think I recall seeing short sections of fiberglass rolls being available, but I might be wrong about this.

From an insulation performance point of view, several layers would be just fine. If the r-30 has a kraft face then you remove the face from 2 layers of r-13 and keep only the last inside facing. If the r-30 has no facing then make your 3 layers look the same. You can compress it a little or you could strip the center layer to be thinner.

Being neat is the important part and I doubt the inspector would object, but they do have the final say.
