Raised spot in backer board

882 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  JazMan
We laid down back board over hard wood floors, and didn't notice a high spot. After laying tile it started cracking and coming up. There is a slot where it's high and even cracked the backer board. Do I have to remove the backer board or will a floating laminate floor work?

Hi Nikki,

Sorry for the problems you're having. You made a couple of mistakes, besides the obvious of not checking that the floor was flat to start. You should not install tile backer board over hardwood or plank substrates.

It's very odd that the backer cracked. Did you spread thinset under the backer, tape the joints? That hardwood must be very loose.

What type of room is this? Going from ceramic to a laminate is kinda extreme, you sure you wanna do that?
