I'm making a 8' long by 4' deep garden on a hill (fairly aggressively sloped). A few questions I have:

- can use 4" timbers instead of 6"
- is pressure treated safe for vegetable gardens? Should I consider using landscape block instead?

This rise of the sloped side of the bed will be about 3 feet.

I have seen people use Creosote dipped RR ties as garden edging.

So if they were not poisoned by growing a garden near these, the pressure treated should be good for gardens.

Is this 3' on the long side or the short side.

If it slopes 3' in 4' that is one steep hill.

I have seen people stack old car tires up to make a retainer wall for landscapes.

Tires are ugly though.

It's all a matter of opinion, some will use PT wood to surround a garden and some will not; I know of no evidence saying the PT leaches anything harmful but a lack of evidence does not mean it does not happen.

Personally, the landscape blocks sound the most visually appealing to me and should definitely last the longest.

...landscape blocks... definitely last the longest.
My 30-yr old garden is a series of raised beds, ~4'x12', but terrain here is really flat. I've always used PT to frame the beds (and haven't shown any signs of poisoning yet), but it seems to last at best maybe 10 yrs. If you use PT, better plan on how to replace it eventually.
