I was looking at my friends new home yesterday and while in the attic we noticed that there were about 5 to 6 rafters cut short about 1/2" to 3/4" all on one side of the ridge. He is not due for an inspection until next week. I told him the builder should be able to repair this but he is considering backing out the deal because of this. (It's his first home purchase).

What are the implications of a rafter just short of the ridge board?

What would be the fix for this?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Make sure he gets a thorough inspection,by a reputable company.I know what could be done, but I'd wait for a qualified inspection and base my decision on his findings.I mean what else is there?A house is a huge purchase and I'd back out in a heartbeat if the list kept growing.Just my opinion though.I'm only a roofer, lol.

What is holding them to the ridge beam?
Just nails?

I guess over time it could move & cause the roof to buckle
Especially if its a lot of them
A snow load would increase the problem

I'm not sure if an inspector would accept 1/2" or 3/4" plywood to fill the gap
