just bought a house with radiant ceiling heat built 1983.
don't know much about these systems so I was wondering the following

do these radiant lines typically run over the entire ceiling area or just a portion of it.

what is the typical spacing between the lines installed in these systems.

will a volt meter pick up the voltage in order to map out where these lines run...I want to change a ceiling light to a larger fixture which will require me to screw to the ceiling.

any links to sites on this or any help is appreciated

Most of the ceiling radiant heat I've seen cover just about the entire ceiling, if not all of it. The wires are actually embedded directly in the sheetrock panels so there will be some sections around the edges of the room where fill in pieces were required.

Some stud detectors also have the ability to detect live electrical wires may be your best bet to try to figure out where the wires are in your ceiling. You won't be able to detect them with a volt meter.

They are hard to find. My brother in law wanted a ceiling fan and add baseboard heat. Coming from switched outlets. The stud finder goes nuts the wires are not very deep.
