I was just watching a random autoplay youtube video and they said that you have to use nails for joist hangers cause most screws aren't structural grade.

We're installing new stringers [today] which we'll be securing to the wall studs, so should we use framing nails for that? Or do stairs not carry enough "dead" load to be considered "structural" in the same manner as joist hangers?

In this instance, I don't think it matters if you use enough. Securing to the wall really isn't structural, as the stringer will support itself if it is secured properly at top and bottom. Securing through the wall does help with movement though, which helps stabilize the stairs, preventing squeaks. I generally will shoot them into every stud, as nails are cheap and quick.

Thanks guys!

No stringer hanger things (never seen those before, will keep in mind for later deck stairs) so it sounds like 12-penny/framing nails at the top and screws just to tie stuff together to prevent moving around too much and what not.

I'm a DIY'er, don't own a framing nailer and don't want one, so rather than use nails in certain instances where driving a nail with a hammer, especially in old hardened wood, would loosen the hell out of previous work, i use screws and not real particular what kind but about double the diameter of a framing 16d.

We did nails at the top and screws into the walls, built a "sandwich" kinda deal at the bottom landing, and put in a second "support wall structure" about midway down from the first one just to sturdy everything up. We haven't even put on any riser connection boards and the stringers are super solid and not moving at all while jumping up and down on them.

I think we have a air framing nail gun in the shop, but my husband just hammered them in. He's pretty strong though and I think he rather enjoyed beating the nails in to blow off steam. I had him good and riled up with political chatter and "being in the way" while we were working :p
