I have a deck off the back of my house that is 10x12 (10’ depth, by 12’ width). I would like to extend the deck’s width by 7’. To accomplish this, I was thinking of pouring new footers, offset by a few inches with the other footers, and sistering the new beams to the original beams. I figured the footers would have to be offset a bit, as the beams would be off by an inch or so. I would then install the additional 7’ ledger, use new joists for the new portion, etc… Is this a kosher way of doing an extension? Or am I better off installing the new footers inline with the old, taking down the complete deck, and install everything from scratch? I am not sure if tying the two decks together is kosher.
