Questions about mosaic tile for shower floor

1698 Views 6 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Fix'n it
A tile company we bought our shower tile from sells mosaic tiles for the shower floor. I believe they are porcelain, @ 2X2", on a mesh.
My questions are:
These tiles are very slick. Is the fact that there will be so many grout lines sufficient to take care of this problem?
Can my $150 ryobi ws7211 tile saw handle these small porcelain pieces?
Should I have porcelain for the shower pan for toughness? Or is regular glazed tile tough enough?

Thanks

typically there are tiles made for the floor and tiles for the walls. floor tiles are normally more grippy. if you think they are going to be slippery then they probably are. i'd look for something else that will work better for you. porcelain are the way to go for tough for a good price. the tile saw should be fine with a decent diamond blade.

Accident waiting to happen. Its not going to be pretty. Your going to slip and go down hard. For a shower floor tile. I would personally go with something which had a rough surface for some traction. Sounds to me like this stuff your talking about is slick like glass tile.
The more grout lines the more chances for a leak and a pain to clean.
the shower should be 100% waterproof before the first tile goes in.

2x2 should be fine regarding traction.

I think 3x3 is the optimum size to conform with some slope and offer some traction, reduce amount of grout a bit.

You're not worrying about grout lines leaking water, but the less grout you have, the easier the grouting is.

I would recommend a urethane or epoxy grout for longevity and ease of cleaning.

The smaller the tile on the sheet, the bigger the pain it is to cut everything.

A regular glazed ceramic would be fine too, but porcelain is more gooder.

i used travertine mosaics like these in my last shower. they were polished shinny. NO ISSUES what so ever with slipping and cleaning. and my wife could trip over a blade of grass.
