Not sure I am putting this in correct spot. I am repairing bottom two rows of siding...replacing with 12 inch width of fiber cement board, I know that I have to face fasten due to the width size. I need to find out what type of nails to use....6D Hot dipped galvanized nails or just galvanized nails, twisted or no twist. Should I place a ripped board at the bottom? Does all of the caulking have to be removed from the house totally or just the best that I can? Would that suffice? Then I would caulk the whole house before I wash the house with the chemicals (suggestions are welcomed)and then final coat of paint. I am sure there will be additional questions; however, I did not want to overload everyone at once. Thanks for the help.:thumbup:

hot dipped or stainless steel [prefered]ringshank nails into the studs,pre drill the holes through the siding,you will be nailing through 2 layers,make sure you repair any damage to the existing felt paper

remove as much old caulking as you can without damaging the siding or trim,i like using a polyureathane based caulk with fibercement

Should I place a ripped board at the bottom?
if you are refering to a starter strip then the answer is yes. this will keep your profile the same on lap siding.

Qestion on Repairing Siding

Thank you for all of your help....spent the long weekend removing the damaged siding, cut out the rotted corners and replaced boards, prime painted the front, back, ends, sides of boards. Fiber Cement Pieces cut easily. Trim board had to be replaced as well.

Made a jig to help make sure the boards were placed properly, job sure went qucker with the jigs. Drilled the holes before hammering in the nails.

They were calling for a severe thunderstorm so I took the time to caulk just to make sure the rain would not undo all the hard work. :thumbsup:

Next step will be to pressure wash, caulk and clean up the old caulk then paint.

Any hints on pressure washing and cleaning solution to use or not use would be FANTASTIC!!!! When all is done I will take a picture and post.
