I found some calculators for estimating cost here: https://www.homewyse.com/services/index.html, with a few relating to molding.

I also got an estimate from a vendor to replace cabinet molding "install new
Medium Oak Assembled 96x0.75x0.75 in. Quarter Round Molding", quoted at $175 total (parts & labor), for the San Antonio, TX, USA area.

Does it really cost that much to install a single piece of (cabinet) molding?

The cost calculating link had an entry for "Molding Installation Equipment Allowance" for equipment rental costs.

Do contractors really tack on such things in their pricing? Passing on some of their equipment/tools costs to customer?

Most tradesman would not walk in your door for that. Your best bet is find a handyman with a good reputation.
