Hello Everyone,

I'm rebuilding my deck and currently the steps have two stringers in the center, but each of the sides simply has wood block support under the tread - I believe it's called a cleat ? I'll try to get a picture and it will be clear why they did it this way.

I'm just curious if this is acceptable, I suspect it is since the deck has a CO and was inspected by the town prior to the home be purchased.

Any thoughts? Thank you !

I doubt we would get away with it, but the argument for it is the outside stringers are stiffer. We cut the stinger and add an uncut 2x12 to the outside to get stiffness on long stringers.

I've used galvanized metal cleats that take three galvanized lag bolts into the stringer and two galvanized lag bolts into the bottom of each 2x6 stair tread. Never knew it could be an issue. I suppose that carriage bolts would be better.
