Hi All,

We are fitting out a laundry room with cabinetry including a built-in broom closet in the corner. My question specifically focuses on lighting for the closet.

If you note the attached pic, the closet will to in the corner you can see to the right (the wall with the triple will be the left side wall and the adjacent wall to the right is the back) - it will extend about 24" deep from the back wall.

From my limited understanding, I have a few choices for lights:

- put a light on the door header (there won't really be one, or it will be an MDF panel and will have to use conduit for wiring
- put a code approved dome light 12" from the front of the deepest shelf, or 12" from the back wall if no shelf
- put a recessed light 6" from aforementioned shelf/12" from wall

I'd like to do a recessed light but as you can see there is a ceiling joist that limits my placement choices. What I am not sure of is how close to the front of the closet I can put it. I don't want to limit storage options (shelves etc) and what I also don't get is that if the deepest shelf is say 18" but only 5" off the floor, am I bound to the 18" starting point? I kinda sorta read that there is a 6' height mark but I think that just refers to the line from the front for other stuff. Any advice on how to proceed is greatly appreciated!

Yeah this is pretty much where I got my limited knowledge from :p

In theory it looks easy enough, what I'm not sure about is say for example I have shelves below the 6' mark, do I need to measure from the deepest shelf?
