I'm about to tackle my roof, I have sun damage on 1 side of my house and the other is in great shape. Is it possible to just tear off the 1 portion that needs to be ripped off and just shingle over the other part of the house? Those shingles are in great shape? Trying to be cost effective but also I don't want to screw anything up.

Thanks,
Nick

You can but? You will probably need to rent a dumpster for the half you are taking off so why not put them all in there ? The only added cost will be extra tar paper .Maybe I&W and some drip edge .Very minimal cost for doing it correctly.

Yes as long as any local authorities who may have jurisdiction are OK with it.
Its a bit unconventional but it will save some money.

As long as the second layer is done properly you won't "screw anything up". You will just have half your house with 2 layers.
As to what you save....
*the time it takes you to tear off half the roof
*the cost of additional underlayment and the time it takes to install.
*Maybe you get by with a smaller dumpster depending on how much roof your talking about.

Tearing the whole thing would be better but if cash flow is an issue then what you proposed falls under "do what you gotta do"

As long as your roof framing can support it, 2 layers of roofing is fine. Depending on how old you are and how long staying in the house, I might even cover with 25 yr roofing and redo in 15 or 20 while still young enough. I'm covering mine with 40 yr shingles.

Thanks for all the quick replies! I decided to just say screw it and rip it all off. I just nabbed a Menards Big card and going to get lifetime Owens shingles. I figure it's worth it considering how much I'd be charged if I had a company install the roof.
