I am installing vinyl planks on top of the plywood floor and, I have some spots in the plywood that are splintered...What do I use to fill this in with?

A cementious based floor filler(not gypsum based) available at most home centers. Just mix the powder with water and smoothly apply with a drywall knife.

Sounds like you're laying over the subfloor. Please tell us how thick this is and what's under it. What vinyl are you using?

That would be expensive and what I suggested will work fine. I have installed and taught installation for many years.

Yea, those Elmer products aren't for this, they're for tiny repairs. Like heating a room with Bic lighters. :wink:

But I have a feeling "mom" is going over a subfloor which would be a big mistake.

I would at least go over the whole floor with 1/4 underlayment rated subflooring making sure to not have the seams line up with the seams below, do not fasten it to the floor joist.
No glue is to be used.
Fasten every 4" on the edges and from 6 to 8" in the field.
If you use a narrow crown pneumatic staple gun and 1-1/4 staples you do not have to go back and fill where all the nail heads are just the seam.
