Hi,

I'm looking to renovate my basement and have noticed it appears about half the basement has already been framed - pretty much anywhere there is a window, those areas have been framed. The odd thing is they did not frame all the way to the floor, instead there are blueish rectangular foam pieces along the floor (not spray foam) - the framing starts approx 6 inches above the floor. I've included pictures of it for reference.

The rest of the basement does not have this and is not framed so I'm ok there but I'm not sure what this blue foam is or what I should do in terms of framing.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Your wood walls only go to the top of the concrete foundation , Before they poured your concrete floor they put foam insulation inside the foundation.

Thanks guys I'm in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The house has a walk out basement so Neal yes that picture you provided looks similar to mine.

So for the parts that are already framed, do I need to add any additional wood to close that 6 inch gap?

Just add drywall or paneling in the normal fashion, down to or very slightly below the framing (sole plate). Add a pressure treated or synthetic trim piece about 7 inches wide or wider as a baseboard to cover the gap down to the floor.

Thanks Allan! Any need to put additional insulation behind the trim piece? I think I should be ok without it?

Hi Guys,

So several projects have come ahead of the basement but I'm finally ready to get started with framing.

As mentioned a little less than half the basement is already framed, the remainder is not framed but is completely covered top to bottom with an insulated wrap. My original thought was to frame over top of the insulation which I think I will still do but I did notice the existing framing are actually using 2 x 6's and on each side wall (not facing the backyard) the wood itself only sticks out 1 1/2 inches. I had hoped to continue the existing framing down each wall to have a nice long flat wall. Is that still possible?

I've included some pictures showing where the existing framing ends and where the new framing would need to go. Would love to have one long wall if possible.
