Hi Guys, the roofer who fixed the leak around my chimney flashing said he would wash and paint my black, sooty chimney. I hesitated because (1) I wasn't sure if black soot would run down and streak my steep roof and (2) wasn't sure if pressure washing would loosen up the mortar between the bricks and create leaks and (3) it seems like painting a chimney would be like painting the exhaust pipe of a semi (just get dirty again real quick). I really don't know if my concerns are well founded or not and thought maybe someone could help me decide.

I just remembered that he said paint would act as a sealer. Thank you, Jean

If you power wash anything with the wrong tip it could do some damage.I have never power washed a chimney but if correct accessories and pressure are honored then I see nothing wrong with it.A certain distance would have to be maintained.

A sealer specifically for chimneys/brick is available.As far as painting it could work IF the proper steps were taken to prevent chipping or flaking.
