I want to pull power from a wall outlet to a switch for a light fixture. I need to know exactly what wires go to what. Shoult I keep the outlet wired as the primary or should I put it to the switch and pull from the switch to the outlet?

Use two wire cable, with ground., Type and size to match existing circuit.

Run from outlet box to switch box, then from switch box to fixture box.

At the outlet, white to white, black to black, ground to ground (bare or green)

At the switch box, white to white, blacks to switch.

At the light, black to black, white to white, ground to ground.

All grounds (bare or green) tie together and attach to any metal boxes. Attach ground pigtail to switch if plastic switch box is used.

Help!

:eek:OK we are not having any luck. I can hotwire the light but then I can't turn it off. I've got black, white, and ground coming from the wall. I hook them up to the outlet and the outlet works just fine. I have a dimmer switch that has two black wires and a green one and I have no idea what to do. I've taken romex up to the fixture I've hung and have the black and white from the romex exposed and down to the dimmer switch. What next????

You say you went o the fixture first. Then you need to wire a switch loop.
At the fixture
Connect the fixture white to the white from the receptacle cable.
Connect the fixture black to the black from the switch cable.
Connect the white from the switch cable to the black from the receptacle cable.
At the dimmer connect the two black wires to the black and white wires from the cable to the fixture.
