Hello, I'm having a problem with the condenser fan motor in my heat pump. I've narrowed the problem down to either a bad run capacitor or bad motor. I'm going to replace the capacitor first and hopefully that will fix the problem. But if the new capacitor doesn't fix the problem, I plan to replace the motor.
My heat pump is a 25 y/o Trane with a GE condenser fan motor. I can't find the exact motor replacement, but an online vendor has found me a replacement Fasco motor (model D787) with the same HP, RPM, VAC, etc. However, after looking at the replacement fan motor specs, I see it has an open-air-over enclosure. The old GE motor has a totally-enclosed-air-over enclosure.
I don't know much about these motors, but since the motor is going to be used outside and exposed to rain and snow, it would seem to me that a motor with openings in the enclosure should not be used in that environment.
Am I correct in that assumption, or am I totally off base?
Thanks!
Gary
