For my kitchen remodel, I need a vent cap installed for the hood. I asked for a cap for 6" duct. What I recieved was a cap with a 10" opening, a not so round 6" hole in the roof and the cap covering some of a stud!!

Aside from letting these jokers back on my property, what's my best solution for fixing a 6" duct to this mess?

Wrong kind of duct cover---all you can do now is rig something up temporarily until you can get up there and change that to a 6 inch with a pipe flange and damper.

See if you can find a 12" square with a 6" hole----then a 6" duct adapter---that would get you through the winter.

That looks like the same professionals, on a new house construction I saw, that put the vent holes in the sheathing with a claw hammer. I'm thankful I won't be around to see what has happened to craftsmanship 50 years from now.

You're using the word professionals like they actually were supposed to be professional. Just because they do it full time and get paid for it, doesn't make them professional.

Those must be the same guys that break through the center of truss joists with a hammer to run plumbing and electric lines.

By the way what is it with the extremely long roofing nails sticking through your deck? Oops never mind, same guys.

If I did work like that, I would shoot myself, but I would probably miss. :whistling2:

oh, mike. That's exactly what plan B is.

They did a "good job" changing three skylights at my parents house about a month ago, they are very happy with the work. I told my dad to not sit under any of them in case they come crashing down. He was not amused.

I am giving them the opportunity to install a correct style cap.. you know, one with a 6" lip for duct and CENTERED between the joists. Lets see if they can get it right the second time.

Depending on the style of vent--they could use the existing hole---the 6" duct doesn'tneed to clear the rafter by much---even using and 8" cover and bushing it down to 6" might avoid replacing shingles.

Would have been so simple to have gone in the attic and driven a nail between the rafters, gone up on the roof and removed the shingles in that area, used a piece of string and a pencil to mark out the hole and use a jig saw to make that hole.

This might just be one of those cases where they used leftovers (vents, nails, etc.) from another job and used it on this job............all the while charging you for these mismatched items that another homeowner already paid for.

Ah, but they did drive a nail from the attic initially. Unfortunately it was too close to the upper? section of roof. Ray Charles then took his sawzall some random distance away and went to town. They were kind enough to hammer the nail back inside.

Awe heck,,,what are you complaining about ? It takes more time to hack away at 10" versus a little 6 incher,,, Its called getting your money's worth. lmao

I would just call them back and have them fix it right,,,Your paying for a job done correctly.Here is what I would do.

Instead of trying to fix it yourself call them back and have them ;

1.Purchase the correct vent kit.
2.Remove the installed vent and shingles and felt exposing the decking.
3.Install new decking.
4.Follow manufacture directions for placement and installation.
5.Cut a new hole,,size as stated in the directions by the manufacture.
6.Install new shingles and seal the vent.

**Most IMPORTANT** At anytime you see any head scratching by your installer have them read the installation guidelines by the manufacture**

Hey ritbakatcha,,Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas,,,,Yeah,,,I know them instructions are just too damn complicated.I mean how many steps could there possibly be ?

1.Remove vent from box. (That's a hard one)

2.After removing vent locate paper with instructions.That's the 8" by 11" white piece of paper showing all the tools you need for installation,a picture of the vent,roof,hole etc.

*Tip* One side is in English and the other is in Spanish.Keep flipping the paper until you find a word that looks familiar.

*Tip* Locate a vent that is suitable for up to a 6" opening.

*Tip* Make sure there is "For use up to a 6" opening somewhere on the box.

I like your Most IMPORTANT PART. Short story, I was installing a heat pump thermostat years ago (10 wire) I had the wiring diagram on the wall and kept looking at it when the owner walked in and said Uho! you look like you don't know what your doing. Reply I do know what I am doing , it's the guys who don't use the diagrams that don't know what their doing.
