I've got a wood ceiling I need to paint. It's been painted white before, but has some peeling and has seen some water. It's dry now, but there are some significant stains in some places. I want to use an airless sprayer. I will top coat with latex paint+primer in a light green/gray. Looking for product suggestions. Should I prime with a stain blocker? Or should I just use high quality paint+primer? Which product would you suggest?

On a related note, I'm using a Graco Magnum X7 airless sprayer. Haven't used it for 6 years. I put 1/2 a bottle of pump armor in it when I put it in storage. Any steps I should go through to ensure everything is ready and in working order?

Thank you!

Water stains are best addressed using oil based primer/sealer. BIN alcohol based sealer works great too but overkill- mostly necessary only on wood knots. Dont waste time/money with water based primer. It may work, it may not, depending on severity. YOU MUST SCRAPE OFF ALL PEELING/FLAKING FIRST!

Prime with a primer, and dont depend on prime plus paint doing the job of priming as primer plus paint is not primer. Yes, it is true.

Have no experience with sprayers, just rolling/brushing.

You need a solvent based prime to seal the water stains. Generally oil base is good enough but if they are real deep stains you may need a pigmented shellac like Zinnser's BIN.

I'd run some thinner thru the pump first. Don't forget the throat seal lube.

We installed bead planking on a rather large cathedral ceiling a year or so ago. Looked really good and rich. Client had her painters paint it using a water based primer. THEN she called me back to take care of the knot holes, saying it was inferior wood. She bought the wood, so I had to set the record straight, and let her know under no uncertain terms would I have painted a ceiling like that.

For wood there is no good/better/best there is only Zinsser BIN. Its shellac based and will stop bleed through and tannin.

Don't waste you time with anything else. Do a coat of Zinsser BIN and then top with what you want after that.
Im gonna disagree, but just a Little. I love BIN. I would rather use BIN than oil any day of the week, but on raw wood, an oil base is better because it will penetrate. BIN will stick like no tomorrow, but it doesnt really penetrate, as it is super fast drying, so on raw wood, an oil base is better to use. If its already painted, and you need stain blocking power, BIN, all the way.

Oh, and as for the sprayer, I would just flush with water, and see how it works with just water. I dont see any reason to run mineral spirits.
