Has to primer in it the ads on TV say so. I was in an Ace hardware store the other day and a woman was looking at paint I overheard her ask the store manager about the paint and primer in one. He looked her right in the eye and said "there is no primer in the paint". I left the store thinking, an honest man, I will be back to your store.

If there's no primer, then why do paints such as Aura say "paint and primer together"

http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/for-your-home/paint-products/aura-waterborne-interior-paint

These still require a separate primer?
Any paint and primer in one SHOULD be able to be used without primer in SOME circumstances. Read the fine print on the label, it will explain when you need a primer. Aura, I would trust, but over bare wood, no. The paints I use I would trust. I will not give an opinion about any of the ones from the big box stores.

So there is no primer in the paint labeled such but is there paint in the primer not labeled such?

Seriously though, is it okay for me to use a primer as a finish coat if I am happy with the color and the sheen?
You can, but as stated, it will not hold up and forget trying to clean it.

Thank you and Monger.

I should have mentioned that it would only be on a bathroom ceiling and over existing paint of similar color. I primed the whole room with Zinsser 123 after sanding and skim coating the walls but not the ceiling. After painting the walls I thought the ceiling looked fine with just the primer on it but I'll paint it anyway if I should.

Not sure why you mention big box, I specifically mentioned BM stores. We're talking about applying it to DRYWALL. If you spot prime any nail pops/fixes and then use a quality BM paint/primer the store said that's all I need.

I don't think this is a debatable subject about what you perceive or not.. the results are there from people that have done this before. I don't know why you would want to use a big box paint at all.. It's like buying nice paint but using a cheap brush.. never makes sense.

I will! They suck! If you compare any of them to a REAL quality paint then you will see what I'm talking about. If all you ever do is compare them to another box store brand or Sherman williams you are just comparing junk to junk.

And all you have to do is read the instructions to learn that they are very limited in where they can be used as a paint and primer in one. And even if they do say things like "can be used on bare rotting dirty a55 wood with no separate primer " what happens when they fail? You get some more of the same crappy paint. Nothing for the labor of applying it whether you did it yourself or hired someone to do it.

There really is no argument. Unless you want to argue about how effective the marketing BS is. There is nothing chemically different between a regular old fashioned paint and a "paint and primer" product. The only difference is the marketing and the extra money they charge for it to cover the second gallon of paint they MIGHT have to give away as a warranty claim.

By "box store brand" do you mean brands that are sold in box stores, like Behr or Benjamin Moore?
