We are looking to price out paints for our remodel project - all the box stores seem to have is paint and primer premixed. Can you get paint without primer in box stores?

What recommendations do people have for non premixed items? Should I go to sherwin williams or diamond vogel instead?

Could I spray on the primer and not backroll? Then I'm thinking I'd spray on ceiling paint then roll on the walls? Thoughts?

This is what I need to cover: How much should I get?

Ceiling - 850 sq ft (I have 3 gallons of whats below)
Bedroom - 425 sq ft
Family Room - 525 sq ft
Laundry/Bath - 525 sq ft

As far as I know, most box stores have Zinsser 1-2-3. Although it's more of an all-purpose/bonding primer, it does a nice job on drywall. It's good to stay away from the PVA drywall primers although I've had no problems using it. And, of course, all the paint stores have quality drywall primers but you will spend a bit more for it there than what you will spend for 1-2-3.

P.S. Paint + Primer is more of a marketing gimmick. There's really not any primer in those cans of paint. If it says paint and primer, it's really just good, old-fashioned paint in there.

you really don't need to bankroll your primer, just your final coat of paint. The reason for the bankroll is in case you ever need to touchup. If you didn't bankroll your repair would have to be sprayed to match. with the back roll it can be don with a roller.
