Im hanging some solid core prehungs in my basement.
should I use my 16 ga finish nailer to secure jambs or my framing nailer with say a 2 or 2-3/8 nails. The fact that their solid core makes me thing the finish nailer might not be sufficient...at least for the hinge side.
I did hang the same doors upstairs years ago with the finish nailer but I noticed i used alot of nails.

also, do any of you take the door off to hang?

I've never used a framing nailer to hang any doors!
No way would I be removing the doors!
Are they split jamb doors?

Screw them.
Nails will fail over time, even 16 ga.

I use a 16 ga to tack the jambs in place until I can get the screws in place. Cover the screws with the door stop.

+1 on the screws. I use 3" deck screws. Counter sink with a 3\8" drill.
I remove the door, secure the hinge jamb, reinstall the door, adjust margin between door and jamb; secure latch side jamb.

for interior solid doors, i take the door off the hinges and set the hing side jamb first using the 16 gauge and 2 1/2" nails, then set the latch side.. when its sitting correct replace the middle screw on the hinge with a 2 1/2" no need to screw the latch side as no weight is on it.. also glue the back of hte casing to the jamb and to the wall

That's the same way I do it.

five fasteners and lock the rest in with trim. I have been doing this for years. with no call backs and this includes in commercial jobs. I do on commercial jobs replace at least 1 hinge screw with longer screw on every hinge.

and for exterior I follow the same but I add 2 additional screws in the center behind weather stripping for security but instead of shims I use GRK top star's hidden behind weather stripping.
