Potlight install question

724 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  MrElectricianTV
Hello, my living room needs potlights!
I understand that there will be insulation and vapor barrier to deal with in the roof space, this is why I'm buying potlights rated for direct contact with insulation.
I have attached a (simple) pic of the room space. I would just like to know what is going to be between the roof ceiling space and living room ceiling space. Will there be some beam or laminated wood beam? How thick would it be?

Could be different things.
Most likely there is a rim joist of 2x material. There could also be sheeting over it.
There should be insulation that could be bats or spray foam.

Depends on the type of construction used. You could have solid wood joists 8" or 10" high. You could also have trusses which could be 12" to 16" high. These can be 16" or 24" apart.

Can you see in the space above the ceiling?
