Hi there,

I am about to start the process of finishing my basement and one of the final steps would be to add recessed wainscoting like you see in the first picture around the walls.

I have a closet/storage area under my steps currently and this is also pictured below, along with what I envision these doors to look like when I am done.

The problem I think I am going to run into is when I add the stiles around the edge of my closet doors, those edges will protrude out 3/4' and I think that it would get hung up on the stile next to it which would not allow me to open the door fully.

I hope my explanation makes sense. The doors will have 1' x 4's as stiles around the edges as will the wainscot panels next to it on the lower wall. There will basically be two stiles next to each other (one on the wall where the current brown trim is and one on the door). I think this will make it impossible to open the doors unless I am missing something.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

What is behind the doors? Could they be removed and storage incorporated into your remodel plan?

I think I would remove the doors and hinges and throw 'em out the back door. :surprise::biggrin2: They look like an after thought.

Check out HOUZZ for ideas. Maybe something will jump out at ya that could be incorporated.

There are some built in shelves back there that the previous owner put in. It's practical but it won't look good if they are exposed without the doors. I think the doors could look good if they end up looking similar to the picture I posted.

you currently have flush face mounted hinges. if you want to add a stile/rail border around your door edges, add it to the adjacent framework also. this would bring both surfaces back on the same plane.

or, you could build a stile and rail door frame with a rabbet on the back. then you can cut down the existing door to fit into the rabbet. (not sure on the thicknesses tho)

there are many options if you don't like those two.

Remount the hinges so the hinge pins are just outside the newly installed stiles. Just as the hinge pins are just outside the existing door surface and existing wall surface today, although the hinges themselves would be mortised into/between the door and frame instead of being fully exposed in front.

You may need to have a wider gap between the two door panels at the middle of the opening, or perhaps cut back the door material about 3/16 inch behind the stiles up and down the doorknob edges, to prevent collision as the doors are closed. This treatment may also be needed with European style concealed hinges.
