Porter Tomato
80 days, indeterminate — The 'Porter' tomato was developed in and for Texas weather. It produces well, setting fruit even in dry, hot climates. Its fruit are ovate (egg-shaped), dark pink in color, about an inch and a half long and weigh two to four ounces.

I never heard of them, probably not a northern variety. I grow Roma pear shaped tomatoes. I like their meatiness with little juice. Makes the perfect BLT or sauce.

I never heard of them and that means nothing. The Roma is a paste tomato but some people like to eat them.

This year I'm all Early Girls and Supersweet 100; not experimenting at all.

Thanks to the internet, credit cards and amazon, it may be impossible to purchase 20 tomato seeds for $2.95. I was told to increase my order to 15 bucks. If Wally doesn't have Porter seeds i'm outta luck and i probably won't be going there any time soon.

Look for "Improved Porter" variety.
The Porter and Improved Porter were developed by Porter in my area. (Central Texas) Less than 50 miles away from me at Stephenville.
Very well adapted for this area and tomato eaters praise them highly.
My bride loves them and has several plants in her garden of the Improved Porter.
We save seed sometimes and have volunteers most years.

Don't have any seed right now.

Seeds ordered and according to tracking i should have them in a couple of days.

Maybe Startingover can advise me on how much OR how much not to fertilize with Miracle Grow so we can have Improved Porters in 80 days hoping we have a very late frost .:vs_laugh:

I don't know, but I only have luck with cherry tomatoes (bigger than average size).
All other species that I've tried haven't done so well in my garden.
My cherry species doesn't attract caterpillars, resistant to insects and needs no tomato food - and the taste is 10+.
They pop up in the yard at around the first week of April, and we start getting nice tomatoes in the middle of June. They will continue giving till around January.
Right now we have 72 plants, some almost 6' tall, each with 30-40 tomatoes.
What a deal!

Feed them at will while seedlings. Ring them (12" circle aprox 1/2 cup to plant) with 10-10-10 or continue feeding after transplant. Stop all feeding when they begin to bloom else you will get vines and no maters.

Starting this late in your season you may want to sucker each plant down to 1-2 growers.
