How do I attach my porch post to the porch deck, that I want to attach a hand rail to? The post will stand alone and only the rail will be attched to it. Do I just toenail screws / nails into the base to fasten it to the floor? That doesn't seem like it would too solid. Seems like the post would wobble.
Please help.
Thanks

Posts like that are bolted into the framing below the porch deck. There's no surface mounted hardware that will work.

You may (probably WILL) have to cut a hole (first drill, then open up the hole with a jig saw) in the deck, right next to some sort of solid structure beneath... be it a post (best) or the banding board running around your deck perimeter. This is what you will, hopefully, be able to attach to.

Try crawling under the deck (find a way! dig some dirt out, or use a mirror on a stick and a flashlight.) to see how and where all the solid stuff is installed, and where you might be able to use it for an attachment.

Thanks Ron,
My problem is that I can't get under the deck.
I'm still researching. Had no idea this was going to be so difficult.

Take the deck boards off so you can in from the top.
