Hi! I'm helping fix some wiring on my father's pool, nothing major but it's still stumping me. What I'm trying to replace is a 4-way switch that was wired to power the 4-way switch used for the pool light, 3-way for the cleaner, and the pump directly. I don't think any of the wiring was done correctly unfortunately based on my experience with house wiring and what I've read up on.

There are two wires coming in from the breaker box located across the yard on the house - a red and a black. Both of these wires then pop out behind the pool where the pumps and such are located. They were originally wired directly into an old unmarked 4-way (no input / output marked and all screws the same color). The way this switch was used was to power up the switch that runs the pool light, to turn on the pool pump, and to also turn on the switch that runs the cleaner. I haven't personally seen a 4-way used this like this - personally I don't like it but I don't have the time or honestly the experience to redo all of this up to current code. I replaced the 4-way using the black and red as inputs and the hooked up the various travelers on the output. I get 120v in and 120v out from the 4-way now but the pump which is connectly directly to this still isn't turning on. I also get 120v to the 3-way that controls the cleaner and 120v out from it but again it won't turn on. I also get 120v into the 4-way for the pool light but nothing out (though the light hasn't worked in a while so not really important right now - just trying to get the pump working). Hopefully someone might have some ideas....

Since you staethat there are only two wires red and black, coming from panel. Thats make it more likly a 220 circuit. What you are calling a four way is a 220 double pole switch. The pool pump and cleaner are probably wired for 220v.
Check and see if you have 110 or 220 coming into the switch from panel.
We can go from there

What would be required to simply have the inbound wiring split to three separate on-off switches for the pump, the cleaner, and the light? I'm not keen on one switch turning on the pump and then also powering up the other two item's switches.

Okay here's a question I hope someone can answer - are 220 double-pole switches just marked 120/277v 20-amp? The old switch did not have an off-on designation but also did not specify circuits by screw color - the new switch was also marked 120/277v 20-amp and no on/off but had two black screws on top for inputs and two gold on bottom for outputs. Is this the wrong switch?

Also - the pump, cleaner, and light are all 110. However the light skips the initial 4-way switch and instead comes to it's own 3-way which actuates the light itself and a receptacle - both of these were dead constantly so I suspect the issue is actually at the box and not the switches.
