I used questionable cerium oxide on a project and ended up with a haze on antique window glass. I don't have time to order higher quality polishing compound. Has anyone here flame-polished glass, and how is it done? I've been googling it, no luck.

You'll break the glass. People regularly break glass when using a heat gun to remove paint from the wood frames around the glass. That's why it's recommended to use a piece of steel over the glass to distribute the heat uniformly on the glass to help prevent it from breaking. Using a very much hotter blow torch directly on the glass would almost ensure that you'd break that glass.

If I understand correctly , your C oxide was contaminated ?
I would NOT apply heat !

You're probably going to have to buy a new jar .........
I don't understand what's going wrong. I'm using a Makita 9207SPB with a 192629-7 pad, washed it before each attempt, low speed, two different stocks of pink cerium oxide (one Gordon Glass, one generic chinese, both probably not high grade but should still work.) It is CAUSING fine scratches and haze. Tap water, slurry, one minute, not overheating.

Yes, I gave up on the blow torch.

I think it's the wool bonnet. Dammit.

I have only attempted scratch removal on modern home windows (with varying degrees of success).
I suspect your problem lies with the glass . My understanding is , glass , (like concrete) , is continually hardening . Old glass can be difficult to cut , and may not respond well to attempted buffing .

If this glass is flat (as in a window sash) you could simply buy a new piece & re-glaze . It is still sold by specialty glass businesses .
