My plumber drilled a hole through a header in our master bath to route some plumbing. When I saw it, I immediately became concerned about the integrity of the beam, particularly since that's where a freestanding tub is going.

Can anyone chime in as to whether this is okay?

Thanks

#1, That's not a hole, it's a notch.
#2, Hard to figure out exactly what where looking at, is that picture right side up in the picture?
As a general rule to meet code it should have been a hole not a notch, not within 2' of the end, and the hole should be no more then 1/3rd the size of the board.
The reason notching is not allowed is where that 90% corner is it causes a weak point where it will crack.

Sorry, I flipped the pic so it's right side up.

I guess there's two concerns, one being the notch, but the other is the hole to the side of the notch where the measuring tape is.

I wasn't actually as concerned about the notch in the joist. But maybe I should be?

Any clarification would be great since I know very little of all this.

After some further research though, it appears as though the hole I was concerned about isn't actually an issue.

The real issue as pointed out is the notch. That header doesn't look to be too long so I think I'll have to look in to replacing it then having a hole not much bigger than the diameter of the drain drilled through.

Thoughts?

It looks to me like the header length is 16". What is it supporting?

Given the position of the notch so close to the end of joist/beam, it may not be a problem, unless it's supporting a big concentrated load.

The hole in the header may be a little big, but assessing whether it might be a problem would require more info on the framing system
