plumbing in a sprinkler system

I am planning on putting a sprinkler system in to water my lawns and some soaker lines for trees and planter boxes. There's quite a few resources online for the how to aspect. The only question I can't find an answer to is how to plumb this into my house. I have a well and all the plumbing is under the house, which has a foundation wall with the house on joists.

I could either drill through the rim joist, which then leaves an exposed pipe on the outside that I run down into the ground, or I can drill through the concrete below grade. Any reason not to drill through the concrete? Is it difficult to drill a hole big enough for 3/4" pipe?
