Hard to say if you need it or not. have to investigate a little further.

Maybe a condensate drain? Do you have an hvac/furnance/water heater system that may be using it as a drain/vent point?? Can't really tell by pic, but looks like it's in the basement

For some reason the photo uploaded with the wrong orientation. It should be rotated 90* clockwise.

The pipe is in the bathroom in a single level apartment. No hvac/furnace, there is a boiler in a separate room but that is all.

Possibly the boiler or water heater is using it as an emergency pressure relief.?? .

Maybe ask your landlord or housing management office if it's needed. It may be serving as a vent for something??. Europe has different plumbing rules and codes than the US.

Maybe others may know more. Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

What is the material - copper ?

From its location, I might guess that at one time it was the toilet supply, but perhaps a new supply line was installed.

At the termination, it rather looks like the cut is at an angle, which may suggest it was a quick (not purposeful) cut. There is an elbow, and then the short piece of pipe which was cut not quite square, so at one time, there was more to this line.

Thanks joe.

Now that the picture is right, maybe it was used for something at one time. Looks like someone just cut it off and used it as a drain for something like dehumidifier/condensation drain or something. It's in the bathroom and the pipe looks really old with lots of paint on it so it's hard to say for sure.

The real question that hasn't been answered "is it needed" in the post they want to remove/cut it off.

If it's not needed, and you are the homeowner not renting or leasing, imo, it can be cut and capped off for sure. but that is just my opinion.

This is in an apartment in London UK and they are renting or leasing. Who knows what their regulations and rules are. My advice would be to check with the super or housing mgr. before doing anything. They also would know more of what it was used for and if it's needed.
