Is it ok to use Philips 72w EvoVantage lightbulbs inside an overhead light fixture rated for 60w incandescent bulbs?

60 isn't bright enough for my Laundry room but the 72w works perfectly - not sure if it would be considered a fire hazard though.

We don't use it full time - I thought about adding a timer switch in case it accidentally gets left on for some reason for a long period of time? Thoughts?

Thanks for the help - I put in a 43w/60 equiv and will let the wife decide if she likes it or wants me to swap the fixture.

Out of curiosity - where is the fire risk? Because the fixture is enclosed? If it was the same setup but inside an open bottom globe like on a ceiling can would it make a difference? It the wire used inside the fixture thinner for lower wattage bulb ratings then that of a higher rated fixture?

The key issue is the luminarie rating per maxuim wattage it can be used for that type of luminaire so if you have the luiminaire that is rated for 60 watts you can not put in any type of lamps which it is over 60 watts at all.

The key reason is heat or fire risk if you do excessed the max wattage on the luminaire.

I have done alot of repairs to fix the conductors when they get very good heat damage from serious overwattage like someone put in 2X100 watts instad of 2X60 watters which that is a good example.

It don't matter if open or enclosed luminaire always go by max wattage rating which it genrally rated for indentscent lamps unless stated otherwise like CFL or LED then it will be noted.

Look at this way....a 72w bulb is going to put about 72 watts of heat energy into that fixture....if it's enclosed....it will heat up....if they made the socket and wires out of cheap stuff....sockets melt...wire insulation gets hard and brittle....cracks...shorts...starts fire...

Put a 23w CFL in there....it puts out about the equiv of a 100w bulb...but only puts out 23w of heat...

And if the wife says she doesn't like CFL....put in one that has the pretty cover on it.....the one that does not show the curly part of the bulb....I'm willing to bet that she can't tell the difference....

Oh....and pick a bulb with about a 4000k...much better color than warm white.
