Got a spare bathroom on my house that was added by the owner a few years before I bought the house (the house was built in the 1940s). It gurgles when lots of water is ran elswhere in the house. Plumber told me it was not properly vented. Recently, however, water from the washer seeps up through the drain on the shower and on the toilet. Also, I have a ~10 foot tall vertical cast iron pipe on the outside of the hosue on the spare bathroom wall. No cap on top and a 2 inch hole cut at the bottom. Recently, water with toilet paper and washer water has been coming out.

I am at a lost. Plumber has been no help. Thoughts?

Sounds to me like you have a clog downstream from your (cast iron) vent.
I would snake it and see if that fixes your other issues. But any plumber would do that too, so maybe I am missing something?

Well I had them snake it a year ago and removed some clogging. It didn't start backing up again until recently. Would some standard drain cleaner work?

Also, any idea why that vertical vent stack thing would ahve a 2 inch hole cut in it at the bottom?

just a guess, since I don't really understand your setup...

I had a pipe that needed to be snaked, but there wasn't an accessible cleanout. The plumber just took a cutting wheel and cut a hole to run the snake through. It should probably be covered with a rubber coupling.

I never seem to have luck with draino but I guess there's a small chance it could work?

Plumber has been no help.

In order for plumbers to be a help they need to be paid.

In this case I'll peg your needed help (dig 'em up and re-pipe)
at about 10 grand (that might include the new water line too).

Well assuming I haven't paid the plumber (I have every fluffing time he came out) is rather insulting

And three years ago when I bought the house I had them dig up and replace the line running from my house to the city sewage

Previous post is right about the hole. It shows signs of previous issues in your sewer line.
Did they replace all of it or just do a spot repair? Did they replace the city stub or just up to that point?

Thanks. Rubber coupling isn't a bad idea. At least fix that problem.

I was trying to avoid having them come out and snake it again, but guess I'm gonna have too. Oh well.

They mentioned the lack of proper venting, would that cause the issue?

They replace the hole thing ($5k). As far as the city stub, I'm not sure...
