i want/need to build this over the windows on the wet side of the house. i have building permit for the work i'm already doing, but do i need to ok this with the inspector?

If these awnings are going to be framed, sheathed and roofed(I don't think that's even a word), I would think so. If these are bolt on cloth or aluminum, maybe not.
This would be a thing I would speak to the Inspector about. Just to keep him in the loop, so to speak.

If you already have a building permit then you really don't need another one. It's not really structural, as in holding up the house.
Unless they have already inspected the rough framing - then you might need to touch base with him

i'm hoping i'll NOT have to have it 'engineered', because it will hold a couple hundred pounds of snow weight, being that wide and flat.
if i draw it up overkill, i should be ok with the inspector?

You need to involve him. If you have a permit already, you'll need to provide an updated plan showing this awning. If it's not in the plan set that he has possession of, odds are he's going to call it out.

ok, i kinda figured as much since it's not just decorative. i'll draft up a sketch as to how i intend to mount it to the structure to show him.
i'm sure it won't be a hassle beyond that as i'll build it way beyond anything he'd insist on. i PREFER it strong!

i had my architech/engineer buddy draw this up. this will satisfy the inspector.
i think i'd like to be a bit fancier somehow though. any suggestions?
