Hello,

My wife and I have been saving money to build a new pergola and have just recently hired a contractor to build it over our porch. The contractor seems like a nice guy and I hate to second guess him as I know nothing about carpentry. He have started the job and I just noticed that the post they set at the ends of our patio are not even. Looking at the picture, the one on the right is about 4 inches further away from the patio then the left one or the other way around..? I forget now.. . At the bottom of the post there will be stone going around a mold but it will still not be "even". They may be doing this for a reason but I have no idea why. They were measuring and doing there thing and seemed very with it..

Any ideas? Why the post would not be even. Something to do with the house? Patio? I would have thought if those were not square then the would adjust something else but maybe they can't for some reason. Please chime in as I need some answer so that I can either confront them or let them do their thing tomorrow..Maybe it's an optical illusion..

Thanks soooo much!! It is super appreciated!

Don't wait and ask him now. Don't have to sound confrontational, say something like, maybe my eyes aren't like they used to be but...

If it is off, much easier to correct at this early stage.

Need to be measuring from the house foundation over where that over hang is to the post.
Very likely that slab was just not pored square.
The post need to be square to the house, not the slab.

No sure I understand the explanation but they said that the post are square to the house not the patio. When I looked down the line as they explained, it lined up..Its hard to explain..Thanks for the responses!

Means your patio is not square to the house. And its the people that originally did the patio that messed up.
