Don't attach it to the wall, make it free standing.I plan to build a pergola, with support beams running perpendicular to the house, and the rafters parallel. A ledger is not possible, how do I attach the beams to the brick wall?
Thanks for your response. A ledger board would cover 2 windows and a sliding patio door, so my plan was to fasten the beams directly to the house outside these features. JazzbrekBrick veneer with wood framing?
Why is a ledger board not possible?
Thanks for your response Ron. You may be right, others have suggested the same thing. JazzbrekDon't attach it to the wall, make it free standing.

Thanks again for your comments and good pic's. Very nice looking...interestin construction...will be helpful in my planning. Larry @ jazzbrekSounds like you may be trying to deal with a situation somewhat like I had to - coming off a single story house resulting in the pergula being rather low.
One solution is to build it free standing but that did not appeal to me. So instead I removed the eave facer/facia boards allowing me to install a ledger board and subsequently the rafters 6-8" higher. I then placed the beams on top rather than on bottom to remove them from protruding down into the view, using what I call 'hanging posts'. I finished the connection to the house by boxing in the eave area and installing down lighting to wash the wall with light - looks great at night.

Hope this may help.
