I have a 25yr old downdraft Payne. The burner comes on but the fan does not start until the burn shuts off. It does come on though and then shuts off. I turned the fan to always on this solved the heating problem but the fan must run 24/7 to keep heating the house. Issue? Control board? Furnace heat switch that turns on fan?

If this furnace is controlled by electronics, i'm thinking the circuit that brings the fan on in heat mode is faulty and the fan coming on is just normal behavior when the limit trips.

got a multi-meter?

30 seconds isn't enough to trip the limit, in fact it's the normal time delay.

this is carrier's older design; goofy spark ignition system with a bi-metal heat activated flame sensor. wouldn't be surprised if the system was sensing a flame-drop out, cutting out and restarting the ignition sequence. can't help you there.

inspect the heat exchanger before throwing parts at it.

Ordered circuit control board. Will check heat exchanger. Will check flame detection. If it is not detecting the flame then system would shut down with or without fan on. Works fine with fan on 24/7.
