Patio Slab - adding footing under for patio cover

I have a patio made up of 8'x8' slabs which are around 4" thick. I'm planning to install a patio cover and will have (3) posts on the edge of my patio. I'm curious what the best method is to put a footing under these slabs to meet code? Code calls for a 14" square footing, 12" thick. How would one put this under an existing patio slab?

Appreciate any input.

Did you read the code yourself? Are there alternatives? What climate are you in? Are the footers for weight bearing or to resist uplift? If it came down to having to do what you said, I would saw cut out the footing areas and place footings that are separate from the patio, then fill the joints with elastomeric filler.
