I would like to build a patio roof over the patio in the back yard. Is there a standard or "rule of thumb" to use for size of lumber and spacing? I would like the roof to be 10' - 12' out from the back wall and 40' long with a minimum number of supports. Considering plywood, tarpaper and shingles for the roof surface.

Check with your local Building Department. Many Counties, Cities require permits for that large a roof permanently attached to your house.

First check your towns code. You don't want to get fined or told to rip it down once you've built it.

If you don't care about code I'd say use 6x6 posts with 2x12 or sandwiched 2x8's as your header and 2x6 rafters angled 1ft rise for every 2ft length. 2x6 joists if you plan on making a ceiling. All 16" on ctr and the 6x6's should be no more than 12ft apart.

Post a picture of the area that you wish to cover.

If you have pictures of a cover similar to the one you would like to build--post that,too.

There are some engineers and designers here along with some plain old people with common sense.

After you get a basic idea of the construction---then you can move into the planning and permit part of the job.----Mike-----
