patio and landscaping

I am considering a summer project of designing and making a patio and rediesigning my whole back yard, and I want to set goals and accomplish myself, yet, I have been told by many that I just ought to go get help from this local comapany: http://www.fixr.com/pergola-construction

but any advice would be appreciated. Would it still be considered a self done oriject if I enlisted the help of others? and what would the benefit be of getting outside help, beside getting the proper permits and other obvious benefits like keeping my hands clean.
