I've done quite abit of reading on how a person could inexpensively update the look of their kitchen counters and came across Paper Illusions. They sent me samples and the paper seems thick and sturdy and is gorgeous. On their website they claim people use it on kitchen counters. I know you would prep, paper, then coat it with several layers of poly. Just wondered if anyone has tried this or knows anything about it. Thanks.

I also read alittle about it on some diy decorating blogs (don't remember the sites) Sometimes you'll read about how great something is but realize the "reviews" seem pretty "fake" and you're not sure if it's legit or not. This idea does not have alot of info out there either. My mom actual has paper illusions on her walls and it is beautiful stuff. Just not sure about kitchen counters. Thanks!

Paper is just not a kitchen counter material. If you try this at least put an epoxy or bar type finish over it and promise to never set a pot or cut anything on it. Bad choice for a home kitchen counter.

Hey Annie,
I used to work with a interior designer who did that effect to her dining room walls, only with tissue wrapping paper. Very unique, however since it offers a bit of a dimensional look, simply applying a couple coats of poly wouldn't do the trick. There's a finish that can be applied over the paper and better serve your needs. I know one product was called "Build 50". Simply said it is a VERY THICK clear mixture that is troweled on (it's much too thick to brush), the concept is one coat of Build 50 is equal to fifty coats of varnish. Many other companies have similar product under different names. Try looking in the Rockler woodworking site and Woodworker's Supply site to name a few. Now you have something to do tomorrow. I did something very similar to this on the kitchen counter of our previous home. I explained what I did in this thread.

While it did look pretty good after three years, there were a couple of not-very-noticeable cuts where DH wasn't as careful as he should have been. It's not a permanent solution. If there are just careful adults in your household it may last for a few years. If you have kids who never seem to see those spills, or a DH who doesn't pay attention to where the knife blade ends up I wouldn't even try it.

It's much cheaper to just buy a new countertop, IMO.
