I'm going back and forth between siding and paint on my house...

I just hate the idea of having to paint every 10 years or so.

The former homeowner did a really cheap job right before they sold the house to me 4 years ago. Because of it, everything is peeling.

Peeling to the point where every painter that's looked said they have to sand down the entire house (i have cedar shingles).

So I guess my question is, how long should a good quality paint job last if they take it down to the bare wood? I know there's lots of factors like sun/shade/trees/weather/etc. I'm in NJ if that helps.

But I'm just looking for a general idea. Some people have told me 5 years, others have said 12 years.

Thanks everyone!

As a long-time painter, I would love to say 12 years, but, in reality, even with outstanding prep, I think the max is about 7 or 8 years. Now, if you have some shade that covers the house and protects it from the sun, you can extend that time to maybe 9 or 10 years. The sun is what usually "does in" a quality paint job. Also, doing routine maintenance such as cleaning the siding every 2 or 3 years helps as well.

Cedar shingles? Just asking, where I live there are none.
