Our powder room has 1970s era Mar-lite. Has anyone had luck with painting over it? Any tips.

I've painted over Mar-lite and other many other hard coated panels successfully. You need to clean, scuff and prime with the right primer. I would clean it with detergent or tsp, rince well to remove any residual detergent. Scuff the surface with 150 grit. Then wipe it down with alcohol to remove the sanding dust and any trace of grease or oil. Prime with a quality oil base primer. Use a mildew resistant top coat and you should have a finish that will last for years.
