What is the best way to paint galvanized steel? I recently installed a chain-link fence gate and need to paint it black to match the rest of the fence. All the spray paints I saw at Home Depot specifically say "not to be used on galvanized steel". I read somewhere that you can wash the surface with vinegar before applying the spray paint but is that really effective to prevent chipping?

While I've painted several old chain link fences I've never painted a new one. With the old fences I'd apply a primer and when dry aluminum paint. It works best to have a helper so you can both roll at the same time.

I'd go to your local paint store [not paint dept] and ask their advice on what coatings to use.

If I wanted a black chain link fence I would have bought a black chain link fence. I can't imagine how much of a PITA painting one will be after the fact. I have used Tremclad to touch up marks and scrapes and find it durable enough.

Wow, tough one. I know on old, weathered galvanized chain link, I would use SW's Galvite, a specialty paint for galvanized metal. Pricey, but effective.
